Our Story

Dr. Howard Fuller, one of our country’s most inspirational educators, reminds us that the “purpose of education is to develop our young people so they can engage in the practice of freedom.” We take this charge seriously.

The name of our school, Libertas College Prep, comes from the Latin word libertas which means “unbounded, unrestricted, or released from constraint.” This name was chosen from our strong belief that high quality education creates the freedom of true life choices, and that all kids deserve that freedom.

We were founded in 2015 with this idea at our core; to build a community that equips our students with the academic skills and character to matriculate to and graduate from high performing high schools and competitive colleges. We believe this to be a sacred promise to our students and families and we have worked to deliver on it every day since the summer of 2015. We earned the California Distinguished School Award in 2021 for our outstanding academic achievement and year after year are the highest performing middle school in South Los Angeles.

These outcomes demonstrate our school community lives Dr. Fuller’s words each day; that our purpose of education is freedom, liberation…Libertas.
