LAUSD Authorizes New Local Charter School

LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES CHARTER FOR LITERACY- FOCUSED SCHOOL SCHEDULED TO OPEN FALL 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Los Angeles, CA – Libertas College Prep, a college preparatory public charter middle school, serving students in fourth through eighth grade, was approved on consent by the Los Angeles Unified School Board on August 26, 2014. Libertas College Prep will open in August 2015 with 144 students in fourth and fifth grade to serve the families of Exposition Park and University Park.

With a college preparatory focus, Libertas College Prep will equip all students with the academic skills and the strength of character to thrive in and graduate from high-performing high schools and competitive colleges.

Libertas College Prep is designed to support middle school students through the transition from elementary school to selective high school programs, allowing them to eventually enter the college of their choice. The school is founded on the belief that all students, regardless of background or previous academic performance, can develop the foundational skills, content knowledge, and strength of character to build school success and graduate from college.

“Research shows that the level of academic achievement a student achieves by eighth grade has a larger impact on their success in college than anything that happens academically in high school,” says Anna Carlstone-Hurst, Libertas College Prep Lead Founder. “It is critical that every single one of our students is on a college track by the time they graduate in eighth grade.”

Libertas College Prep is modeled after high-performing charter schools from across the country and utilizes proven best practices including an intense focus on literacy, a data driven approach to instruction, a structured and joyful school culture, parents as partners, and integrated computer literacy. Lead Founder Anna Carlstone-Hurst has had the support of Building Excellent Schools, a national nonprofit that trains high-capacity individuals to design, found, lead, and sustain excellent charter schools in underserved communities nationwide. www.buildingexcellentschools.org.

Libertas College Prep will be accepting applications for its inaugural fourth and fifth grade classes beginning in January 2015. Parents seeking information about enrollment or those interested in supporting the work of Libertas College Prep should contact Lead Founder Anna Carlstone-Hurst at (310) 902-6808 or email info@libertascollegeprep.org.
